As a business owner and housing provider in the Tenderloin, M3 takes our role in protecting residents and the community seriously, with the goal of providing every single person in a M3 home the highest quality in affordable, workforce housing. According to Mayor London Breed’s office, there has been a rise of homelessness and a reduction in quality of life and safety for housed and unhoused residents alike in the Tenderloin since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
With more freedom to move about the city again, major city players are stepping up to do their part to create safer streets for those who live, work, and visit the neighborhood. M3 is also upping its participation and consistently increasing its support of key services in the neighborhood.
M3 has long-employed security services and loitering deterrents, engaging security guards within our buildings, hiring SFPD officers for foot patrol in front of our buildings, having security camera systems in place, and ensuring common areas are well lit. What’s new, however, is a donation and go-forward commitment M3 has recently made to Urban Alchemy to help them partner with us and the broader community in better patrolling our streets and improving cleanliness and safety.
Urban Alchemy — the team of people in the Tenderloin who are dressed in all black with lime green trim on their reflective vests— cleans the sidewalks of needles and human waste, reaches out to help people on the street, and creates safer public spaces in the Tenderloin and South of Market. The non-profit, started in 2018, hires people who have been homeless, incarcerated or who have experienced substance abuse, themselves. They have the unique ability to relate to the very people on the street who they seek to help.
Neveo M3 has a saying, “We do well, by doing good”—and Urban Alchemy is definitely a source of good in this neighborhood that is having a positive impact on the greater good. That’s why M3 is placing the company’s support behind them. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that “in a one-month period Urban Alchemy collected 2,973 needles and 2,089 bags of trash; scrubbed 17 graffiti murals; and addressed 113 reports of human waste.”
Urban Alchemy is helping to keep residents safe and improving conditions in our shared neighborhood. M3 is delighted to stand behind this group. The service they provide for the broader community has such a positive impact.
